I know they have been mentioned previous in a few stories with one even being part of the Faculty in Gen 2. But what i'm curious about . Where do they come from? How do they differ from a regular magic using practitioner? And what kind of limitations/ power can they possess?

I'd imagine a fair number of them are gonna be Avatars, Channelers and Paladins. Others may be Wiz Mutants who've discovered a spell/knack that lets them do something specific that may mimic a Magical Girl ability and beyond that there are possibly magical items that could empower a person or dynahosts that could give a person that powerset.

You mention all these possibilities...But what is the actual definition of Magical Girl? It can't be something as simple as a girl who uses magic? Or am i being superficial?

I don't care as much about where they come from, but rather, about who exactly is the (retired) Magical Girl who is Wondercute's Faculty Advisor in Gen2.
Here's the thing: she is called Brittney Ellison, and the similarities with Kerry Ellison AKA Seraphim go farther than the surname... both beautiful blondes with magical powers?
Now, Kerry has a sister, but she's called Madison and she's younger, meaning that even if Madison manifests, she's unlikely to graduate before 2012, too late for her to have a respectable career as a Magical Girl-type superhero before retiring.
But then, Kerry does have an older sibling who is known to have an inclination for magic... her brother Ray. And he was sent to study under Master Zheng in San Francisco -- who, from the name and location, sounds like an Oriental mage. And Magical Girls are a staple of Japan. Well, Zheng sounds more Chinese than Japanese, but it's possible that something under Zheng's care was the catalyst into turning Ray into a Magical Girl. That could give Ray a maximum of about nine years to:
1. Come into her full powers,
2. Change name from Ray to Brittney,
3. Have a superhero career for a few years before retiring, and
4. Fully acclimate into being not only a girl, but one with an affinity for "cute" stuff (possibly part of the Magical Girl thing).
Yeah, this epileptic tree is probably off its meds.

Lets assume your theory has some semblance of truth. The question then becomes...Why would Whateley hire a mage with less than 20 years experience to teach in a Ivy League prep school? And if she uses an innate ability...That's really something you can't really teach. And in all honesty she was what got me to post on this topic.

Remember... when mutants manifest in ways that lead to them becoming Mages, it is most typically a result of the "Wiz" trait. This is expressed through a higher than normal fundamental potential in their Well, especially once it is lit. This results in the ability to more easily acquire and retain Essence. Other mutants manifest sensory traits that may or may not otherwise be tied to Psi abilities that allow them to perceive through some means the presence and movement of Essence and active spell energy (typically denoted as Wiz 0 in mutants who do not otherwise have a Wiz trait, but considered part of the Wiz trait when existing in combination with it).
Having these traits don't make the mutant a Mage, however. In fact, having these traits does NOT mean the mutant has to study magick at all. A bit of mental discipline carrying around an Essence storage device to keep their Well at manageable levels is a viable alternative. Foolish... but possible.
This is why the School of Magickal Arts at Whateley does not have to be staffed by mutant mages. Being a mutant mage may make it easier to practice magick, by provided significantly advanced access to Essence; but any Mage who can adapt to the faster pacing of teaching students with excessive Essence is just as qualified as a mutant Mage would be. Having at least one mutant mage on staff who can deal with the specific issues of Well discipline, hobgoblins, and 'wish fulfillment' spill that comes with high levels of Wizard traits would be wise... but that would be the only reason to specifically staff mutant mages.
Some Magickal Girls are basically like a Legacy, except they transfer through ownership of the key object or 'token animal friend' ... others, the transfer is handled by a higher power in the same way the Imbued get their abilities.
As to the name? Ya... no connection. Unless we decide to make one. But mostly, remember, we tried to do as much as we could to limit such tie ins so we didn't make our own work a nightmare of continuity checks every time we turned around in Gen 2. So... no. No connection to Kerry.

That being said...I wonder if we have any actual Legacy/Sailor Moon esque students enrolled atm. Most of the magical users are described more like traditional mages than some anime craziness running around .

That reaction was very similar to Astrodragon's comment on the Bad Ideas Thread.
I'll be watching you two. Does anyone know if there's an emoji or emoticon for a suspicious squint? I can't find one.
Insanity: for when normal just isn't interesting enough.
All ideas free to use. You can probably make better use of them than me.

And that's exactly what AstroDragon said. I'm still waiting to see it. Unless one of Hikaru, Morgana, or Miss Ellison is the one you're referring to.
Speaking of Hikaru, Okami HD hype.
[EDIT] Ammy did call Hikaru a "Mahou Shoujo" in Sunshine & Fury .

Ofc we know about the G2. But i was wondering about the Current G1 girls. Miss Ellison should be graduating somewhere at this time in order for her to make it to G2 faculty...But that leaves the question. Where did she come from? What school/teacher did she have? Was she a villain? Was she a goodie goodie girl? We don't really know. I'd love to see a G1.5 Story on her.Maybe a Origin flashback. An evil Sailormoon...The ultimate plot twist!

Miss Ellison just might be old enough to have graduated before the first canon stories were posted, that is, class of 2006 or earlier. But I'm still suspicious of that last name...

You've actually been explicitly told this, you haven't read the stories carefully enough
I love watching their innocent little faces smiling happily as they trip gaily down the garden path, before finding the pit with the rusty spikes.

I guess some people can't get over the fact that Whateley doesn't follow the
One Steve Limit
for first or last names. I've always been bothered by the trope, since in real life, you're inevitably end up with a environment with at least two James or Toms or Robyn's. That confusion is just part of life.
"Wait...which Fixx?" So...one thing lead to another and you have set yourself up for a wonderful misunderstanding comedy relief section.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the only Gen 1 "magical girl" is Mischief's friend, no?
Jade doesn't count, though we all know she wishes it were true.

Yeah Kat...I can't figure out if any of the girls in G1 are MG's myself. Tons that are girls who use magic...But none in that wild anime Sailormoon esque stylings.
I'm guessing you're talking about Jenny aka Fairy Girl? It was hard to find her since she's not on the Wiki. had to re read Mischief Managed to find her mention.

I guess that was directed at me, and I guess I deserved it, even if I'm very aware that Whateley does not follow (nor could it, in a practical sense, given the size of the universe) follow the One Steve Limit.
OTOH... just because it could be an innocent coincidence does not mean it is just a coincidence. Not in this case, which has been explicitly dismissed by Canon fiat. And not in a lot of other cases (for instance, there's a Security guy called Grimes who, to the best of my knowledge, is unrelated to Elyzia Grimes. Not to mention the League of Elaines...
But then, sometimes it's not a coincidence, it's a clue. So it bears to check it out.

It wasn't aimed at anyone in particular. I thought the same at first as well. But it has been mentioned multiple times by multiple authors that is coincidental.
