OK there were a few moves that Chaka would have a bit of trouble with (the tosses to another person, assuming Chaka was trying to solo the routine).

My biggest problem with the routine, was that it wasn't done in a Fireworks factory, in an area full of straw or hay, or some other highly flammable substance.

  • Nice choreography.

If anyone is in London, UK, then you can catch a bunch of us doing this sort of thing live on the Full Moon Firespins on the Thames Beach.

Next one on the 27th of May.

  • Random idea: Chaka as Mutant+, and her choco-horny and sugar rush are fueled by collective belief in the ideas that those foods have those effects...

Unless the Testers can find biological, or placebo, or psychosomatic effects to explain choco-horny and sugar rush.

  • Actually, fire dancing and fire juggling have really caught on in the past few years, especially with the neo-hippie/Burning Man crowd. A friend of mine, Juggling John Goodwin, took it up about ten years ago, and has some of his practice sessions and performances on his YouTube channel , though most of them are from about five years ago so I don't know if he's still at it.

  • It's worth pointing out, since there are Youtube tutorials out there to learn at home, that juggling fire is an inherently hazardous act only partially ameliorated by proper safety measures. A prominent fire-dancer died about a month ago after one of her routines went awry.

Yes, doing anything with fire is inherently unsafe, whether it's blacksmithing or juggling.

    That's the point.

Unless the danger exists, then you don't get the "There-ness" that comes from the clarity that it creates.*

It is also at it's most dangerous when you start taking it for granted, and stop paying attention to what you are doing. That's when accidents happen.

It's why the event i mentioned is a memorial both for Linda Farkas and Alex Lee.

  • Hmm... Chaka got a dose of Freya's Brisengamen Effect via Sahar, as an attempt at inoculating her against it... If that's a Chekov Gun waiting to be fired... Team Kimba, or at least Chaka, should face off against Freya at some point...

  • I had to dig waaay back to find the Chaka topic. I had to because there is one specific characteristic that makes me dislike her immensely. The name thing. To me it just seems... I dunno, disrespectful. Disrespectful to beings that historic and/or religious significance like Wakan Tanka or Aunghadhail. That always rubbed me the wrong way, could you imagine if she did that to Jesus or Muhammed's names?

Christians do claim a bit more godhood on behalf of their prophet than Muslims do.

Aunghadhail: neither deity, nor prophet, just the Queen of a long dead nation of essentially aliens, who are dead just like her. Maybe in a few hundred or thousand years Nikki might rate the sort of respect that her predecessor's shade presumed was still her right. Until then, she's still nothing more than Chaka's roommate, and Nikki needs that grounding.

Wakan Tanka: really isn't Wakan Tanka, but the whole situation is wakan, and Chaka is definitely wakan, as are fools and madmen and two-spirit people. And to a point, Wakan Tanka is like the Buddha. If you meet the Buddha on the road, walk on by.

"Two men say they're Jesus - one of them must be wrong."

You might want to go back through those scenes and ask yourself if Chaka is disrespecting the persons who are actually present in the here and now: Nikki and Kayda.

I put Aunghadhail in the "historic" category. But as far as Wakan Tanka and Aunghadhail, I still think it's really disrespectful to refer to someone else's historic or Ideologic leader spirits as Unga-Dunga or Tonka Trucka. I mean if she weren't nearly as centered, I could easily see Kayda hauling off and punching her.

Furthermore, Chaka has called Aunghadhail that to her (borrowed) face, and she did NOT like it.

Rude it may be. But the character is irreverent by nature. Liking all of our characters is absolutely NOT a requirement. Hell I'm rather unfond of one of mine. But the character isn't likely to change to become more PC in any given situation.

Besides, Caitlin's rather nasty about calling people who irritate her (Ungabunga, Mamaterasu) names they probably dislike, given her personality. Except when someone is dead. Or out of earshot. If you're gonna light someone up, do it to their face, and the dead can't defend themselves or fire back.

Aunghadhail has no place in human history. All anyone has on her is conjecture and stories told by very unreliable narrators.

Wakan Tanka is Wakan Tanka, and NOT a Eurasian "spiritual leader", "ideologic leader", or the like. I'd very much recommend reading up more on Lakota culture if you think hauling off and punching someone would be a reasonable response to teasing.

But it's NOT Aunghadhail's face, which she frequently forgot, along with her place.

  • In Aung's case, you have to remember that Chaka is Fey's roomie, and had to deal with Aung's frequent tantrums of outraged nobility. Simply stated, from Chaka's POV, Aung's was like a high-society spoiled brat who whines because she doesn't have everything just the way she's used to. Toni comes from a very different background, and this sense of privileged entitlement is irksome to her. And she is irreverent by nature; her reflex is not to indulge the spoiled brat, is to taunt her. Chaka wasn't disrespecting an historical figure, she was taunting this annoying sort-of-part-time-roommate.

And yes, her habit of making fun of Aung carried over to Wakan Tanka, who does not "take over" Kayda the way Aung did to Fey. So it may not be an appropriate reaction. But then, she probably figures that either Wakan Tanka has a sense of humor, or she needs to be taken down a couple pegs, like Aung needed.

  • I think others have covered this well: In general, I feel very, very strongly that people should be called what they want to be called. I think, at least in Aung's case, Chaka had clear and valid reasons for not doing so. With Wakan Tanka, it is a lot more ambiguous.

I also think that, if there is an issue here, it is more ignorance than malice. If Wakan Tanka (or anybody else) calls Chaka on it, and she persists, it becomes a different issue.

Like all the people out there named Jesus or Mohammed? Or the Professional Wrestler that wrestled under the name Tatanka? Plus people make jokes, sometimes crude, about Jesus and Mohammed all the time. One important thing is that Toni never did it maliciously.

  • I like that Chaka has some annoying character traits, keeps her more real.
Giving these nicknames is insulting, but it's understandable from Chaka perspective as grounding the person and ensuring they don't get too uppity and annoying. It works to reduce their dignity just a bit, without going into vicious bitchery.

Well, ninja'd but yeah, the mention about Amaterasu (and henceforth Hiikaru) is a pretty obvious one. And I guess if we see Caitlin not slaughtering the name of someone she dislikes, we can take it as a pretty nasty red flag for said person.

It's not really much of a spoiler. We know Cait is still on campus. We know Amaterasu is on campus. It was quite likely that they would meet. Now if he had said Toni, that would be a spoiler.

  • We actually know that Toni is alive and well in Gen2; she appeared in "The Road to Whateley." It wouldn't be totally out of character for her to drop in for a visit to the old alma mater, particularly if she is interested on how Nick is doing. And, of course, for a special class in "getting your asses handed to you" for the advanced Martial Arts students...

This qualifies as a major spoiler? Somehow? I don't feel like Mamaterasu would be offended though... she's way laid back. Hikaru, however...

  • First - the forum is VERY busy this afternoon. Me likes!

Second, it's not shown, but WOG here is that Kayda feigns being annoyed by Walkie Talkie and Tonka Trucka from Chaka, just like naming of the special tomahawk kata. It's part of their social interaction - Chaka tries to yank Kayda's chain, and Kayda obliges by pretending to be upset, figuring that if Chaka didn't care, she wouldn't bother with the friendly kidding. And Wakan Tanka finds the pet nickname amusing, as she finds Toni refreshingly different.

  • So want to see Chaka pull this off!

Toni grinned. “So you two headed back to Whitman? I’m sure we can find a place for you here. We’ll put you in the room next to Sharisha.”

“You want her beaten on a daily basis? Does Horton know you harbor such ill will towards your cottage-mates?” Diamond asked drily. Her brawl with Sharisha in Arena 77 had been odd. She’d constricted the girl till she was passing out, careful not to break bones when she’d been hit in the brain with a psychic hammer and passed out. Unfortunately the spasm that occurred from it meant Sharisha needed to spend a few days being tended to by Jericho, Lifeline and Prism between visits to Doyle Medical.

Chaka smiled beatifically. “I don’t want her beaten, just reminded that some people have limits to their tolerances.”

Sandra chuckled. “Alright Toni, tell you what, you convince Horton to let me in and forget I’m not crazy and we’ll see about me being evil.”

    “Deal.”
