I love watching their innocent little faces smiling happily as they trip gaily down the garden path, before finding the pit with the rusty spikes.

You seem a trifle peeved, old boy...

When in doubt, blame the Jew because he's 5'4"?
What has he written? Let's see... "The Vulcan Hello"
"On a relatively primitive planet, Captain Philippa Georgiou and First Officer Michael Burnham of the USS Shenzhou open a well, and enable the planet's residents to survive a coming 89-year drought."
*twitch*
One well.
For an entire planet.
Oh, look! It's a "gusher" ... which equals success! Nope. Just overheated water flashing to steam and driving a small portion back up the shaft. At least their tongues can reach now.
I suppose the homage to the old line "We come in peace; shoot to kill." deserves microprops.

If it were an artesian well in the classical sense of having a head above land surface, looking down the well while the pressure is being uncorked can be an unfortunate life decision.
Also, the water lift doesn't have much rope on it, but the rifle burst is shown going a long, long way down. With the water level already tens or hundreds of feet below their reach, the locals should have already died of thirst and dehydration long before the Federation dropped by.
Ignore the fact that if the "primitive natives" had the technology to dig that narrow a well that far down through rock, they could have cleared any blockage themselves. Before anyone whines about needing to break through "the bedrock": yes, it's possible a bedrock-hosted aquifer could be potable, and under sufficient pressure for the potentiometric head to be notably higher than the aquifers above it such that breaking through an impermeable layer (which won't stay open long without a casing) would be helpful, and that unit would just happen to have a water-bearing fracture passing directly under that spot. It's equally likely that praying to Space Alien Jesus would have done the trick.
Also, take a look at the complete lack of irrigation or any other system of water distribution. (Maybe SAJ did drill the miracle well after all) If there are any other surviving members of the race, this just became downtown Baghdad in the coming 89-year water war. Go, Team Fed!
If engineers get to complain about unrealistic depictions of their fields in science fiction, so does this geologist/hydrologist.

I have no idea how to react, mostly because I have no idea who either Ethan Peck or Alex Kurtzman are.
More to the point, I don't know how competent an actor Peck is. He does seem a bit too rugged (probably inherited from gramps) and, well, twink-ish (hmmmn, but given Hollywood in the 1940s and 1950s... that could be inherited, too
) for the role, physically, but that's just based on that one picture.
(I know that the elder Peck was a ultra-manly leading man in his day, but so were Rock Hudson and Sir Lawrence, and they were both diggin' dudes in a big way. I like to would think that Greggie was more like Olivier, who was mostly a "one woman and one man at a time" man; this aspect of Sir Larry's psyche worked out just fine for Danny, I imagine - not to mention Olivier's wife and Kaye's wife, who apparently keep each other warm while the boys were away. Ah, my sort of people!)
