Question Which of Whateley Academy's 3 Psychs do I use?

  • Which of Whateley Acdemy's 3 Psychiatrists do I use?

I've got twins who are Hive Minded, but I'm not even sure if that is something that should be treated at all, as while abnormal, (Should I even be using that word?), it's not debilitating or causing undue stress.

The only problem I can think of off the top of my head is that they would destabilize if their Hive Connection was broken. I guess that presents problems like Seven of Nine's detachment from the Borg?

  • Have them able to act fairly normally while together, solving things a little more quickly, but acting a little more slowly when making a decision. Nothing drastic just enough to be noticable.
But when separated, have big chunks of their memory missing, one will remember an important discussion he had with someone at lunch while the other one doesn't remember a thing. And making a decision becomes even harder as they verbally talk it out and getting frustrated, since they're so used to having someone else to talk things over with. They also don't think as quickly because they don't have the shared knowledge anymore. So still functional and if it happens often enough something they can learn to compensate for, but a definite handicap

Interesting! Not my type of Hive Mind, exactly, but close enough to be useful... However, which Psych do I use, if any?

Other than an initial meeting, and perhaps a couple checkups during the year, I think that any oversight would be the houseparent's responsibility. For the initial meeting either Dr. Bellows or Dr. Markham.

  • Wait, are you asking about psychiatrists or psychics?

Don't call me "Shirley." You will surely make me surly.

I think I'm gonna go with Dr. Markham as Bellows seems a bit full, even at the beginning of the year. Do we have any gathering of his appointment schedule?

Psychiatrists. I thought I'd be obvious since Whateley has a lot more psychics, and we've only been given the names of 3 psychiatrists, but the ambiguity is still there, and it is a reasonable question for this universe, so I cleared it up in the actual post.

That brings to mind, that in-universe, the ambiguity would either come up a lot more, or slang has changed to avoid it...

I would have said 'shrinks' but that sounded... unprofessional?

  • Whateley probably has more than three shrinks. Between family issues, trauma associated with manafesting as a mutant, the ridiculous prevalence of H1! sympathey, BIT's and power related psychosis (like Deidricks) a significant number of students would require consoling. So it is feasible to make a OC shrink for your character to meet (it is fanfiction, after all).

  • I think there was a 'word of God' on this on the old forums, the schools has a lot of 'councillors / advisors', but only two medical psychiatric professionals, and one professional student councillor, the others are just staff with experience.

Then again, there are a lot of layers of support provided, there is the cottage house parents and student helpers in each of the cottages for immediate advice / support, the teachers and offical 'student advisors' for a more formal layer of help and counsel, and then there are the offical three councillors / psychiatric help for only the more extreme issues.

It's wrong to think the school has 'only three' staff to support the students, these three are just the very top of a pyramid of support structures in the school, often monitoring and advising the other staff doing the real day to day work, there to step in when needed.

  • I would think of it as not wanting to overflow the readers with to many different providers. I think of it this way and this is my own thoughts. In "I Dream of Jeannie" Dr. Bellows is the in-house psychiatrist for all the astronauts. We don't see many other astronauts, but I'm sure there are as with other doctors. Only we see mostly Dr. Bellows treating or spying on Maj Nelson as well as Roger.

Writers don't want to unnecessarily drift to far away by introducing characters that will soon be forgotten as long as its a part of the plot device, else we could have seen Maj Nelson interacting with to many other astronauts. It might have worked but for what purpose? The story focused more on using Maj Nelson, Roger Healey and Dr. Bellows as with Jeannie. Others of course were drawn in but to me these were the main characters.

There are a lot of characters in Whateley and maybe if adding one more might not hurt (not referring to new writers and such) but to introduce more background characters would most likely create more problems as they have to be written somewhere into the timeline.

That is not to say it can't be done for Gen2 and such or even Fanfic just that if made Canon now with the first gen would be problematic.

What is - was. What was - is.
